Model UN Society Essex

Model United Nations Society

The Model UN Society at the University of Essex is in its 4th year of existence is a well-established society on campus, the 5th largest in membership within the Societies Guild of the Students Union. The society aims to increase awareness of global issues on campus and expand members’ understanding of multilateral diplomacy and the work of the United Nations. The principal scope of Model UN activities is for students to take on the role of foreign diplomats and debate global issues whilst simulating the work of various UN bodies and agencies. Participants research information on their assigned country and topic, investigate international issues, debate, negotiate and develop their own solution to issues that are affecting the world today. The society holds activities on a weekly basis, providing its members with introductory discussions on the concept of Model UN, workshops on Model UN’s Rules of Procedure, research and negotiation techniques, and resolution writing. The society often holds mock debates on topical issues so that delegates may put into practice what they have learned during the workshops. These skills are also put into practice during Model UN conferences across the UK, Europe and globally. The society provides organisational and often financial support, when possible, for members who wish to represent the University at Model UN conferences organised by Universities all around the globe. Over the past two years MUNEX has been able to send delegations to a large number of International MUN conferences including London International Model UN, Harvard World MUN (The Hague), and Global MUN (Geneva). We are extremely proud to announce that thanks to the support offered by the Alumni Fund and by the Students Union, a delegation of 13 members will be attending National Model UN in the UN Headquarters in New York this year. On top of the conference-based activities that the society often organises, panel discussions and film screenings on a large variety of world issues are often held in conjunction with other societies. Such collaboration with other Human Rights Societies had proven to be very effective in this academic year and include Human Rights Day, Holocaust Memorial Week, and the upcoming Spring Festival. Events organised by the society are always well attended and we are pleased to notice that every year the society attracts many new enthusiastic members.
