Human Rights Council PDF Print E-mail

The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body that, since its creation in 2007,  is responsible for  strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.  It is composed by representatives of 47 countries which are elected by the UN General Assembly. Once elected they have a three year mandate and no member can occupy a seat for more than two consecutive terms. The states are elected amongst the UN’s regional groups bearing in mind the following proportions: 13 from Africa, 13 from Asia, 6 from Eastern Europe, 8 from Latin America and the Caribbean, and 7 from the Western European and Others Group.

This year, MUNEX have decided to continue in the tradition of simulating the Human Rights Council, a field in which the University of Essex excels. While the world around us is ever changing, the mindset of the people in it and leading it do not always follow suit. With this in mind and after careful consideration we have chosen a theme for the conference that we find to be most suited to tackle these problems:

Contemporary Forms of Discrimination
