A Model United Nations (MUN) conference is an academic simulation of the United Nations. Organiser of the conference decides which committees will be represented in each particular conference. It could be the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the sub-committees and other bodies such as the International Court of Justice.
Students participating in the conference take on roles as delegates each representing a different country in their committee. During the committee sessions the delegates give speeches, debates, negotiate in groups in order to find a solution to the world issues put forward at the beginning of the session. These topics can be as diverse as international conflicts, breach of human rights, protection of the environment, world peace and security or economic and social affairs.
The aim of every committee is to come up with a resolution regarding the topic being discussed and to pass it with as many votes possible.
The delegates must respect the rules of procedure so that the committee session runs smoothly. All throughout the conference, they must put aside their personnel opinions on the topic and represent their assigned country’s view. The idea is to represent the state’s opinion as faithfully as possible so as to make the conference realistic and accurately simulate the United Nations.
MUN conferences are not exclusively about the committee sessions. It is also a great opportunity to meet other delegates coming from completely different backgrounds and countries. It’s an experience you will never forget!
